At the prime of his career, legendary Shaw Brothers director Chang Cheh made the entertaining fantasy kung fu film The Fantastic Magic Baby (1975). More than a decade later, with his filmmaking focus moved to China, he again tried to adapt the well-known stories of Journey to the West for the silver screen. The result was this Mainland movie Go West to Subdue Demons (1991), and it would become one of the Hong Kong film maestro's last works. The film follows the Tang Monk and his three disciples on their westbound pilgrimage, beating monsters and villains along the way. Low production values aside, the film does have many interesting elements, including some incredibly funny effects, and action actor Dong Zhihua (Donut in Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle ) starring as the Monkey King.
