Part prison melodrama, part relationship drama, and all harrowing, The First Time is the Last Time is a generally overlooked, but no less worthy Hong Kong film. Carrie Ng stars as Winnie Wong, a seasoned inmate whose life sentence makes her the perfect mentor for rookie prisoner Yuk (Season Ma), who's in for only six months, but has been thrown in among violent inmates, hardcore lifers, and some nasty prison politics that would make anyone think twice about ever committing a crime again. Yuk's intro to the prison world is not pretty, but thanks to Winnie and Inmate 5354 (Meg Lam), Yuk is able to tough it out. She also learns the details of Winnie's incarceration, which date back to her youth, when she dated the charismatic Yung (Andy Lau). Young and innocent then, the years and the hardships of prison have transformed Winnie into a fearsome fighter who still retains her humanity despite inhuman surroundings. Director Raymond Leung brings a grim and gritty feel to The First Time is the Last Time , and his actors avail the material with stunning emotions. Both Carrie Ng and Meg Lam were nominated for acting awards at the 9th Hong Kong Film Awards for their powerful, human performances.
