Ge You, Zhang Ziyi and Asano Tadanobu lead a sprawling cast in Lethal Hostage director Cheng Er's ambitious period crime drama The Wasted Times . Set in Shanghai during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the stylistic and violent epic employs a nonlinear narrative to reveal the trials, tribulations and betrayals that befall a Shanghai mobster and his inner circle on the eve of war. Many of the characters in the film are inspired by real-life figures including Ge You's mob boss, which is based on the notorious Du Yuesheng. Besides a shocking and suspenseful story, The Wasted Times enthralls visually with art and costume design by Yee Chung Man and cinematography by Ning Hao regular Du Jie. The film's impressive ensemble cast includes Gillian Chung, Yolanda Yuan, Du Chun, Nie Dahong, Yan Ni, Huo Siyan, Han Geng and Wallace Chung. Mobster Mr. Lu (Ge You) is the king of the Shanghai underworld, but even he feels the threat of changing tides as war begins to break out and the Japanese come a-knocking. Meanwhile, free-wheeling socialite Xiao Lu (Zhang Ziyi), the wife of Mr. Lu's good friend and investor Wang (Nie Dahong), dallies with a movie star (Han Geng) and puts her own life at risk. Mr. Lu tasks his brother-in-law Watanabe (Asano Tadanobu), a Japanese national who professes to be Shanghainese first, to send Xiao Lu to safety. When the Japanese lay a trap for Mr. Lu, it is also Watanabe who steps forward to save him. Though Mr. Lu survives the assassination attempt, his family members soon start to fall victim as he eventually realizes that the greatest enemy is from within.
