Actor-director Jiang Wen serves up action and absurdity in the rollicking period comedy-drama Hidden Man , the final installment of his Beiyang Trilogy. Adapted from Zhang Beihai's novel Xia Yin , the film continues the eccentric, larger-than-life style of Let the Bullets Fly and Gone with the Bullets against the complex backdrop of a 1930s Beijing filled with mobsters, spies, soldiers and foreigners. Eddie Peng ( Operation Mekong ) and Liao Fan ( Black Coal, Thin Ice ) face off in this violent yet kooky revenge tale packed with double crosses and double entendres. Jiang Wen himself also appears in the film along with actresses Zhou Yun ( The Sun Also Rises ) and Xu Qing ( Mr. Six ). Fifteen years ago, Zhu Qianlong (Liao Fan) turned on his martial arts master and murdered his master's family in cold blood. One young boy, Li Tianran, survived the bloodbath and got taken in by an expat (Andy Friend). Raised in the U.S., Tianran (Eddie Peng) returns to China 15 years later as an American sleeper agent and he wants revenge. In the shadowy terrain of 1936 Beiping, the earnest Tianran encounters many unpredictable elements and people that complicate his mission: aggressive Japanese soldiers, a manipulative businessman (Jiang Wen), a willful seductress (Xu Qing) and a captivating seamstress (Zhou Yun) who is planning a revenge of her own. He bides his time for the chance to kill Qianlong, who suspects Tianran's identity and makes moves of his own.
