The World is the first government-sanctioned feature by China's 6th Generation director Jia Zhangke, whose previous underground works such as Platform and Unknown Pleasures have been widely acclaimed among film critics and movie lovers alike. The film title The World actually refers to the Window of the World amusement park in Beijing. While the park promotes itself as a place for you to travel around the world without stepping out of Beijing, the film revolves around some migrant workers' helplessness of failing to escape from this park to enjoy the freedom of the outside world. Far more dramatic than his previous works, The World is no less critical of social issues and Jia Zhangke continues to show his humanitarian concerns in a film replete with animated sequences and extravagant pageantry. Zhao Tao, who also starred in Unknown Pleasure , becomes Jia Zhangke's muse once again. She plays a dancer Xiao Tao in the amusement park who walks around Indian palaces, Eiffel Tower, Egyptian pyramids, prosperous Manhattan... and her boyfriend is the chief guard protecting The World . While their seemingly fabulous lives are indeed routine and mundane, Xiao Tao receives a phone call from his ex-boyfriend who is departing for Ulan Bator, a symbol of the outside world in the film The World captured the prizes for Best Feature Film and Best Cinematography at the Sixth Las Palmas International Film Festival in Spain and the Grand Prix du Jury at the 11th Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema in France. It was also chosen as the closing film at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2005.
