Again directed by Nagai Tatsuyuki, the CloverWorks feature animation is a delicate and thoughtful examination of the relationships, music and growth of four young people. 17-year-old high school girl Aoi lives in a town surrounded by mountains. As a second-year student, she should be studying and thinking hard about her future, but the aspiring musician spends all her free time playing her bass guitar. Thirteen years ago, Aoi's parents passed away in a car accident. Since then, it's been her older sister Akane who takes care of her. A high school senior back then, Akane gave up moving to Tokyo with her boyfriend, and instead stayed in their hometown to work. Aoi feels guilty that Akane had to give up her plans in order to raise her. One day, famous singer Nitobe Dankichi comes to perform at their town's music festival and one of his backing musicians is Akane's ex-boyfriend Shinnosuke whom she hasn't seen in years. At the same time, 18-year-old Shinno time-travels from 13 years ago to the present day and suddenly appears before Aoi.
