Hong Sang Soo meditates on the creative process of filmmaking in his 2023 feature In Water , which was selected for the Encounters sidebar of the 73rd Berlin Film Festival. Following a trio of friends wandering Jeju Island, the poetic film is mostly presented out of focus in lingering vignettes with Impressionist strokes. Aspiring actor Seong Mo (Shin Seok Ho) suddenly decides to direct a self-budgeted short film. He goes to Jeju with his cameraman (Ha Seong Guk) and female lead (Kim Seung Yun), but he doesn't know yet what he's going to film. The three walk around the rocky, windswept island, waiting for inspiration. Seong Mo sees a woman picking up trash alone on the vast beach, and has a brief conversation with her. Through that encounter, he is finally able to create a story.
